A basket full of apples
Elif was seven years old and terribly excited: Grandma had given her a whole basket of apples – red, green and yellow ones. “They're all mine!” Elif thought, and sat down with them in the yard.
Just then Can came by. Can lived next door and had not had a good day. He looked at the basket but said nothing.
Elif thinks
Elif thought about it. She had so many apples – far more than she could eat. She remembered what her mother always said: “When we share, the joy becomes twice as big.”
Elif took the most beautiful red apple and held it out to Can. “Would you like one?” Can beamed. “Thank you, Elif!”
Twice the joy
Soon more children from the street came along. Elif handed out the apples, and they all sat together, laughing and chatting. In the end the basket was almost empty – but Elif was happier than she had been in a long time.
In the evening she told her grandma about it. Grandma smiled: “You see? What you give away makes your heart rich.”
Let's think
- When did you last share something?
- How did it feel – for you and for the other person?
- What could you share with someone tomorrow?
