Something on the pavement
Emir was walking home from school. There was something brown lying on the pavement: a wallet! Emir picked it up and looked inside. There were banknotes, a few coins and an ID card with a photo of an older man.
Emir looked around. There was nobody to be seen.
Two thoughts
“With this money I could buy the new football shirt,” Emir thought. But then a second thought came: “The man is surely looking for his wallet. Maybe he needs the money for food or medicine.”
Emir knew: being honest is right – even when nobody is watching.
The surprise
At home Emir told his father everything. Together they looked at the ID card: the man lived only two streets away. They went there and rang the bell.
When the man saw his wallet, he almost cried. “I've been looking for it all day! Thank you, my boy – you have an honest heart.” Emir walked home with a warm feeling inside. That was better than any football shirt.
Let's think
- What would you have done in Emir's place?
- Why is it important to be honest even when nobody is watching?
- Who can you tell if you find something valuable? (Parents, a teacher, the lost-property office)
