Mentoring, Education and Volunteering

A conversation can open a door

What kind of job would suit me? Should I go to university or choose vocational training? Where can I find an internship? Who can I turn to when I need advice about studying or applying for work? Many young people ask these questions. Sometimes the most helpful first step is simply talking to someone who will listen.

For many years and across generations, members of Frankfurt’s Hamidiye mosque community have supported school pupils, apprentices, university students and jobseekers. This help is voluntary, free of charge and offered within the resources available to our community. Our aim is not to decide anyone’s future for them, but to share experience and help them find their own path.

Guidance through personal experience

If you are unsure about a career or course of study, you are welcome to ask. A community member may be able to describe life in a particular profession, share their experience of vocational training or university, or offer practical tips for an application. Conversations between generations can open up perspectives that are not always found in a brochure.

We cannot answer every question ourselves. Whenever possible, we can point people towards someone with relevant experience or a professional advisory service. You do not need to be a regular visitor to the mosque to ask a question.

Can a mosque also be a place to find work?

In the sense of a community network, yes. A jama‘ah (local congregation) and the ummah (the wider Muslim community) bring together people of different ages, jobs and backgrounds. A conversation after prayer may reveal that a business has a vacancy, someone in the community can offer an apprenticeship, or a member knows a useful contact.

Where opportunities are available, we help share information and connect people. This support is voluntary and involves no placement fee or commission. We are not a commercial recruitment agency and cannot guarantee a job or apprenticeship. Employers make their own hiring decisions.

A responsibility rooted in faith

The Qur’an calls on people to help one another in goodness (5:2) and honours those who have been given knowledge (58:11). An authentic narration reports that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that Allah continues to help a servant while that servant helps another (Sahih Muslim 2699a). We understand these teachings as encouragement to turn compassion and knowledge into practical action.

Experience becomes more valuable when it is shared. The person asking for advice today may be the mentor of tomorrow. This is what volunteering means to us: service to others, not a business transaction.

Developing learning support for children and young people

We also aim to establish or expand structured tutoring and educational support for children and teenagers, including those who do not attend Qur’an classes. To take this forward, we are currently seeking a teacher for Qur’an, Islamic studies and school tutoring. The advertised teaching position is paid and is separate from the volunteer mentoring described above.
