A house for prayer
A mosque is a house where Muslims pray together. In Arabic it is called “masjid”, in Turkish “cami”. Many mosques have a round dome and a slim tower called a minaret. Our Hamidiye Mosque in Frankfurt looks like an ordinary house from the outside – inside there is a big prayer hall with a soft carpet.
What do people do in a mosque?
- Pray – alone or all together in rows
- Learn – for example reading the Quran
- Meet – see friends, eat together, celebrate
Did you know?
- Before entering the prayer hall, everyone takes off their shoes. That keeps the carpet clean, because people pray on it.
- In the mosque people speak quietly so that everyone can pray in peace.
- A niche in the wall, the mihrab, shows which direction to pray in.
