We are here for families following a death

The death of a loved one is an emotionally and organisationally difficult time for relatives and families.

As an Islamic community, we regard supporting the deceased and their relatives as an important part of our religious and social responsibility.

Following a death, family members may contact our Imam or Board in confidence.

The support provided by our mosque is voluntary and free of charge.

Within our possibilities, we can assist with:

  • initial guidance following a death
  • Islamic questions concerning burial and funeral rites
  • contacting suitable funeral-service providers
  • arranging the Islamic funeral prayer
  • organisational questions surrounding a funeral
  • contacting appropriate services where repatriation abroad is requested
  • spiritual and pastoral support for relatives

Our mosque receives no commission or payment for referring families to funeral-service providers.

Any fees charged by funeral homes, airlines, cemeteries, public authorities or other external providers are not included in our free support.

Funeral prayer

The Islamic funeral prayer – Salat al-Janaza / Cenaze Namazı / صلاة الجنازة – may be performed at our mosque by prior arrangement.

Dates and organisational details should be agreed with the Imam or Board.

Washing of the deceased

Our mosque currently does not have its own facility for the ritual washing of the deceased.

The Islamic washing of the deceased – Ghusl al-Mayyit / Gasil / غسل الميت – is therefore carried out at suitable facilities or through appropriate funeral-service providers. All applicable legal, public-health and hygiene requirements must be observed.

Our mosque can assist families in contacting suitable providers, but does not itself perform professional activities reserved for funeral-service companies or other authorised institutions.

Repatriation abroad

Some families wish for a deceased relative to be buried in their country of origin or their family’s home country. We can also provide organisational assistance in such cases.

In particular, we can help establish contact with suitable funeral-service providers and other competent bodies. This assistance is provided regardless of the deceased person’s nationality or ethnic background.

The actual transportation and repatriation of the deceased is carried out exclusively by authorised companies and the competent authorities.

Compliance with the law

All funeral arrangements are subject to the applicable laws of the Federal Republic of Germany and the relevant state, municipal, public-health and administrative requirements.

Religious wishes can only be carried out within this legal framework.

Our mosque does not carry out any activity contrary to legal requirements, official instructions or required permits.

Financial hardship

Our mosque does not normally cover general funeral or travel expenses and does not provide freely disposable cash payments.

In an exceptional hardship case, the competent governing body of the association may consider whether a specific necessary service can be paid for directly.

Such assistance is voluntary and decided on a case-by-case basis. There is no entitlement to it.

Grief and pastoral care

Our support does not necessarily end with the funeral.

Grief can continue for weeks, months or much longer. Relatives may therefore also approach our Imam or Board after the funeral.

We can listen, provide spiritual support and, where appropriate, help identify suitable professional services. More information is on our page “Pastoral Care & Support in Difficult Situations” (linked below).

Contact

You can reach our Imam and Board in person at the mosque or by email at info@hamidiye-frankfurt.de.
